To advance research and development, Nagoya University just announced plans to build a new 15 petaFLOP GPU-accelerated supercomputer. The system will be used to develop new weather modeling systems, new drugs, advance conventional simulation of numerical computations, apply AI to healthcare, and develop AI-powered autonomous machines.
“The digitization of university education and research activities has increased the demand for computing,” said Kensaku Mori, Director, The Information Technology Center of Nagoya University. “The new supercomputer will be offered not only to Nagoya University but also to universities and research institutes nationwide, contributing to the further development of academic research in Japan.”
The new supercomputer will be built using Fujitsu’s PRIMEHPC FX1000 and Fujitsu Server PRIMERGY CX2570 M5 servers. The system will include 884 NVIDIA V100 GPUs.
In total, the supercomputer will be made up of over 2500 nodes with both Arm and X86 components.
“The sum of the theoretical computational performance will be 15.88 petaFLOPS, making it one of the highest performing systems in Japan,” Fujitsu stated in a press release.
As one of the national joint usage researchers centers in Japan, the Information Technology Center of Nagoya University provides compute resources for both academic and private use.
The new system is expected to go online in July.
