X11 Deprecation and Application Compatibility#
Mutter Wayland is now the default compositor for Ubuntu desktop.
Legacy X11 applications continue to function through the XWayland compatibility layer. While XWayland provides hardware acceleration, native Wayland applications offer superior performance and long-term platform support.
Note
On the login screen, use the “ubuntu” session option for successful login. The “ubuntu on Xorg” option will fail to log in and is not supported.
Development Recommendations:
Existing applications: Supported through XWayland compatibility; migration to native Wayland recommended
New development: Target native Wayland APIs for optimal performance and platform compatibility
Performance-critical applications: Migrate to native Wayland for maximum efficiency
Remote Access: Traditional X11 VNC servers such as
x11vncandtigervncserverare not supported on DriveOS 7.2 Linux NSR. This applies to all client APIs, including native X11 applications, XWayland-hosted applications, and Vulkan SC applications using the X11 window system integration. Use Weston’s native VNC backend for remote desktop access — see VNC for setup instructions.
